A Whole New World for Brave Alfie
01/04/2025
Earlier this week, eight-year-old Alfie from Sunderland, experienced a life-changing moment as he was presented with his brand-new specialist powered wheelchair.
Alfie, a brave young boy living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and autism, faces daily challenges due to his condition. For over two years, he has been unable to fully enjoy the great outdoors after outgrowing his previous wheelchair. However, his new chair, designed to support him into adulthood, will significantly enhance both his physical and mental well-being.
The chair was made possible by The Boparan Charitable Trust, a national children’s charity dedicated to transforming the lives of those with disabilities, life-limiting conditions, and those living in extreme poverty. The funds for Alfie’s new wheelchair were raised by staff from the Bernard Matthew’s site in Sunderland, via a highly successful dragon boat racing event. Driven by the BM team.
Richie Gill, Site Director of Bernard Matthews Sunderland, expressed his admiration for Alfie and his family, saying, “It was truly inspirational to meet Alfie and his family. It is clear that the new chair will not only change his life but also that of his whole family.”
Alfie’s mother, Lisa, shared her heartfelt gratitude, stating, “The new chair is beyond our wildest imaginations. It feels like all our Christmases have come at once.”
