Inspirational Athlete takes on the Great North Run

29/01/2025

Inspirational gold medallist, actor, and model Rafi Solaiman is set to bring heart and hope to the Great North Run in an incredible personal challenge. At just 12 years old, Rafi’s life was turned upside down by a devastating brain haemorrhage that left him needing to relearn how to walk and speak. Following 12 months of hospitalization and rehabilitation, he discovered the sport of frame running—a transformative moment that ultimately saw him represent Great Britain at the Dubai 2019 World Para Athletic Championships and achieve a gold medal in Poland and another Silver in Paris.

Rafi’s journey began with the vital support of the Boparan Charitable Trust, who helped fund his very first frame runner. Now, as an ambassador for the Trust, Rafi continues to give back and inspire others through his incredible resilience and achievements. Over the Christmas period, he captured national attention with his performance in the headline-grabbing BBC One drama, Strike.

This year, Rafi is taking on his next challenge: completing the Great North Run alongside his sister and training partner, Jodie. Though more accustomed to shorter distances, Rafi is undeterred by the monumental effort required for this half marathon, channelling his determination into raising awareness and funds for the Boparan Charitable Trust.

Speaking about his motivation, Rafi said, “There are far too many negative stories in the world now; everyone is lacking a bit of spirit and heart. That’s why I’m taking on this challenge—to inspire others to help others.”

Rafi and Jodie will be running in support of the Boparan Charitable Trust, a national children’s charity dedicated to helping children with disabilities, life-limiting conditions, and those in extreme poverty. Rafi’s innovative idea to “put some heart back” into the world includes a special way for supporters to get involved. For a small donation of just £5, supporters can nominate a loved one, family member, or someone’s memory to be included on a special heart on his running vest. For £25, donors can secure a larger heart with space for a personal message of support for Rafi and his team.

This initiative not only allows supporters to share in Rafi’s journey but also amplifies the message of hope, resilience, and community spirit that has defined his life.
